Portsmouth
assistant manager Joe Jordan has backed calls for the African Cup of
Nations to be staged in the summer.
Pompey are set to lose five key players during January and February next year, but Jordan feels this could be avoided. "I don't know all the arguments behind staging it at that time, but from our point of view a switch to a summer date would suit us," Jordan told BBC Sport. "It would benefit a lot of clubs with African players and give the players and coaches more time to prepare." The African Cup of Nations is traditionally staged in the first two months of the year because of the continent's unpredictable weather conditions in the summer months. The rainy season hits western and central Africa in June and July, while the weather in South Africa, which will be hosting the 2010 World Cup in those two months, is usually cool. And former Chelsea striker and BBC Sport's Gavin Peacock has little sympathy for those clubs affected by the loss of African players for the 2008 tournament, which will be staged in Ghana from 20 January to 10 February. "They know when they sign African players every two years a large proportion of them will be missing," Peacock told BBC Sport.
"I'm sure if it could have been switched, they'd have done it by now. "The tournament needs to benefit African football, not European football and if that means it's played in January and February then it needs to be played then." Despite the loss of those five players, Jordan says Portsmouth are not put off signing African players. He said: "We're signing players from Africa because of their ability and at the moment that far outweighs the handicap of losing them for a few weeks." Portsmouth midfielder Sulley Muntari, who is due to play for Ghana in the 2008 tournament, also supported switching the tournament to a summer date.
"That's something I feel will benefit everyone and stop all the problems," said the Ghanaian midfielder. A 2006 survey of African players revealed 79% (204) of them were playing for clubs in 21 countries within Uefa. At that time English clubs attracted 9% (24 players) but that figure has risen to over 40 in the last year. Chelsea are perhaps the most high-profile club in the Premier League affected by the 2008 tournament and are set to lose four players, including striker Didier Drogba. Their manager Avram Grant is a firm advocate of a summer switch.
Grant said: "I think everybody wants it the African Cup of Nations to be scheduled to suit the European calendar, but it doesn't depend on me. "We need to think about this. When they started the competition there were not so many players playing in Europe. "Now the Africans have many players in the Premier League and in other leagues - and in my opinion it will be even more in the next few years. "So we need to think about this because it's not good for the players or the clubs. It would be better in the summer but I cannot change it, I can only say my opinion."
Premier League players likely to be playing in the 2008 African Nations Cup:
ARSENAL

Capello to become England manager Fabio Capello will be appointed as the next manager of England later on Thursday, BBC Sport understands.![]() BBC sports editor Mihir Bose says the 61-year-old Italian has been offered a four-year deal worth £4m a year. The former AC Milan coach's appointment will be ratified by the Football Association following a conference call involving board members at lunchtime. Capello, who has also coached Juventus, Roma and Real Madrid, succeeds Steve McClaren, who was sacked in November. According to the BBC, Capello's contract will have a clause in it allowing both parties to review their options after the 2010 World Cup in South Africa. There is no concrete news yet on Capello's assistants, but there is also expected to be some kind of English influence, with Alan Shearer or Stuart Pearce tipped to earn a role in the new managerial set-up. Former Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho was the initial favourite to take over from McClaren, but he eventually ruled himself out of the running. The FA quickly turned its attentions to Capello, although World Cup-winning coach Marcello Lippi was also thought to be in contention. Capello expressed his interest in the job just days after McClaren's departure, describing it as a "beautiful challenge". He finally met for discussions with FA chief executive Brian Barwick and director of football Sir Trevor Brooking in London on Wednesday. Those talks were described as "extremely positive" by FA director of communications Adrian Bevington. Capello has a hugely impressive CV and comes with the backing of such football luminaries as Sir Alex Ferguson, Arsene Wenger, Gianfranco Zola and Clarence Seedorf. They are full of praise for his achievements, qualifications and standing in the game. Capello has enjoyed success in both Italy and Spain. He has won nine league titles in 16 years as a coach, picking up silverware with all four clubs he has been in charge of. He won the Champions League with Milan in 1994 and was also an accomplished player, winning 32 caps for Italy. McClaren paid the price for England's failure to reach next year's. |

First Test, Kandy:
Sri Lanka 188 & 167-2 v England 281 (day three, stumps)
Muttiah Muralitharan created history in his hometown of Kandy as Sri Lanka seized the initiative on day three of the first Test against England. Muralitharan took the one wicket he needed to pass Shane Warne's Test record of 708, and raised the bar to 710 with excellent figures of 6-55. England rallied to reach 281 all out and secure an important 93-run lead. But Sanath Jayasuriya's ebullient 78 swung the match back Sri Lanka's way as they closed on 167-2, 74 runs ahead. In what proved to be a crucial over, Jayasuriya was dropped by Ian Bell high above his head at slip off James Anderson on 35. Having hit the first ball of the over for four, and gaining another boundary thanks to Bell's drop, he also despatched the last four balls of the over to the ropes. In an instant, the momentum had swung Sri Lanka's way and they did not let the advantage slip. Soon after tea, the lead was wiped out, and Jayasuriya pulled Matthew Hoggard for the first six of the match as he and Michael Vandort established Sri Lanka's best ever opening stand against England. Eventually the 38-year-old's luck ran out with the total on 113, umpire Aleem Dar upholding Hoggard's appeal for lbw. England desperately needed the wicket, and they were fortunate to get it as the ball appeared to have pitched outside leg-stump. Kevin Pietersen sat out fielding duties, nursing a broken little finger, although England stressed he would be fit enough to bat in the second innings. Meanwhile, his team-mates pressed for a second wicket, eventually removing Vandort for 49 when Bell righted his previous wrong, diving to his left at slip to give Anderson a valuable wicket. Monty Panesar (0-53) bowled immaculately without any luck on a wicket that had not deteriorated as much as expected. And with Kumar Sangakkara and Mahela Jayawardene looking untroubled at stumps, England were left needing a big day on Tuesday to rekindle victory ambitions. When the day dawned - thankfully bright after the Sunday afternoon deluge - all the focus was on Muralitharan. He bowled the second over of the morning after England had resumed on 186-6, still two runs behind. But while Muralitharan tried
everything to snare either Ryan Sidebottom or Paul
Collingwood to break Warne's record, England steadily
accumulated. Collingwood was the epitome of
patience, while Sidebottom on-drove Dilhara Fernando for
four and clipped a Murali delivery wide of mid-on for
another boundary. After nine fruitless overs Murali was
replaced, with captain Mahela Jayawardene opting to take
the new ball and the celebrated spinner - and an
expectant crowd - had to wait.
And the record arrived when a delivery sent from around the wicket got through Collingwood's usually watertight defences to bounce and hit the top of off-stump. Immediately, firecrackers were heard around the Asgiriya Stadium as 6000 Sri Lankans celebrated the historic moment - and on the pitch Murali was enveloped by his ecstatic team-mates. But England were not done, despite the loss of Collingwood for 45. Hoggard drove Chaminda Vaas for two boundaries, before being stumped off Murali on the sweep. Finally, Vaas wrapped up the England innings just before lunch when Anderson was out lbw. |
